Proposal photography is, hands down, one of the best parts of my job. There is something so heartwarming and fulfilling about spying on people while they profess their undying love to each other! Just kidding! I’m usually in plain sight and I usually have my client explain that he hired me to capture some shots before the actual proposal. It’s really only when they walk up to the proposal site—which, of course, has been set up beforehand—that she suddenly realizes what is happening. By that point, they completely forget I’m even there and the magic ensues!

Blake and Julia met through mutual friends when they were 15 and became the best of friends. It was natural that they evolved into a couple many years later. Their favorite thing to do is hang out at a certain spot on the ocean at Snickett Park in Sechelt, BC . They would often and eat dinner or watch the sun set and it became their special place. When Blake decided he wanted to propose, he knew exactly where he wanted to do it. He contacted me and told me his plan and we worked together to make it happen.

Proposal Photography & Planning is super important!

Proposal Photography can be so nerve wracking because there are just so many things that can go sideways. Trust me on that one! The couple can be delayed, we can lose the light or they can arrive too early and spoil the surprise because it’s not set up yet; the weather can take a turn; people can show up at the designated spot and have to be asked to move. There are just so many unknowns and possibilities. It goes without saying that having a good plan (and a good backup plan) in place is essential to ensuring that a proposal goes as smoothly as possible. And that’s why I always go over every possibility with my clients and nail down the plan before the big day arrives.

As I was waiting for Blake and Julia to arrive, I could feel my excitement about what was to come. And I also feel my nerves jumping around as they always do when I’m about to get into proposal photography. I hoped it would all go well and (even though we did have a glitch or two)! When all was said and done, he asked, she said yes, and the rest is the beginning of a beautiful new story.

Congratulations, Julia & Blake!
